The Super Saver

Many are living paycheck to paycheck, with a need to stretch every dollar. Foodbanks aren’t always an option. Tough times call for getting resourceful.

HOUSEHOLD ITEMS

Bed & Bath Warehouse: For overstock of household products, such as bedding, bath linens, home decor, clothing, seasonal merchandise, toys and food items. Savings of upwards of 90%. Two locations: Brampton and Hamilton.

Clearance Warehouse: Twice a year, Clearance Warehouse opens their doors for customers looking for deals on household essentials, such as bakeware, tools and small kitchen appliances (like mixers and convection ovens). Savings average between 30% and 90% off. Three locations to visit: Brampton, Etobicoke and Oakville.

FOOD

Grandview Discount Foods: an independent discount grovery store located in Oshawa, Ontario. They offer a wide variety of food at a discount (including fruits and veggies) that might otherwise end up in the landfill. You can visit them at 600 Grandview St S in Oshawa or call them at (905) 579-8378.

The Grocery Outlet: With inflation, grocery prices seemed to have skyrocketed in the past few years, making it harder to get even the basic necessities. The Grocery Outlet specializes carrying over run product, close out product and over productions. As a result, it means savings for you. They have 13 locations locations in Ontario, including Whitby, Newmarket, Toronto, Oshawa, Trenton, Peterborough, Port Hope, Cobourg, Brockville and Ajax.

Too Good Too Go: as a way to combat food waste, Too Good to Go has connected with restaurants and stores to provide an option of offering left over food to consumers at a discounted price. Options vary by location, but has included Pizza Pizza, Tim Hortons and various bakeries.

SECOND HAND ITEMS

Once Upon A Child: Clothing is expensive. When your little ones are young, they grow though clothing like no tomorrow. By buying second hand, you can save substantially.

Buy Nothing Project: Buy Nothing is a gifting community, where items that are no longer needed are gifted to a new home. Everything that is gifted is free. Need an item? Participants are encouraged to ask.

Freecycle: With a similar premise to the Buy Nothing Project, items are posted and given away for free, keeping much needed items out of landfills.

Trash Nothing: Another great way to keep items out of landfills, with individuals giving and receiving in local communities.
